Our Beliefs

“In essentials unity,

in non-essentials liberty,

in all things charity (love)”

From the earliest days of the Church Christians developed short, simple summaries of the faith. These short statements became known as creeds. The word ‘creed’ comes from the Latin word credo, meaning ‘I believe and trust’.

The creed is, in many ways, a distillation of Scripture; each of the statements within the creed may not represent a particular chapter and verse, but each statement is rooted in a recurring truth within Scripture. The creed helps us to identify the core beliefs of the Christian faith, giving all Christian denominations a common reference point.

In all other matters of theology and doctrine, we echo the ancient Christian wisdom of "in essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity (love)"

For us at The River, The Apostles Creed covers the essentials. and with liberty and love we are committed to exploring the non-essentials together.

The Apostles Creed

We believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

We believe in Jesus Christ,
his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the Hades.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living
and the dead.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic (universal) Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.

Amen.
